How To Install Bike Drink Holder
Updated on March eight, 2022
With the growing popularity of eyelet-mounted bags and cargo cages, bike tourers and bikepackers are increasingly looking for ways to add mounts to their fork or downtube to attach such accessories. In addition, many desert routes and trips through warmer climates crave extra hydration, and so mounting extra canteen cages or oversized cages under the downtube, on the fork, or fifty-fifty on the chainstays is often a necessity for supplementing water chapters. These affordable workarounds tin can besides serve to upgrade older bikes for those looking to try their hand at bikepacking but without the greenbacks to invest in a dedicated rig.
Braze-ons, Bosses, and Eyelets
Before moving on, allow'southward clear up some terminology.
Braze-on, a common term used to reference a bolt mountain on a bicycle, is defined as a small fitting on a bicycle that has been permanently attached to the frame. The term comes from how these parts were attached to traditional steel frames. Even though these fittings may be welded onto titanium or aluminum, or glued and molded into carbon, affix-on lives on as a style to describe these mounts. Typical braze-ons include cable stops/guides, rack and bottle cage mounts, or, even more than bemusing, bosses.
Bosses are usually interpreted as welded, brazed, or attached protrusions, such as a cantilever brake bosses, rack bosses, shift lever bosses, or even cable guides. However, in the framebuilding parts world, bottle bosses are also very commonly sold as threaded inserts, or as we know them, canteen bosses. All that said, each of these terms is fine and cracking, just since the term braze-on doesn't ever perfectly describe the threaded attachment used for cages and muzzle-mount bags, we'll refer to these as either mounts, eyelets, or bosses.
Ultimately, more than and more bike frames are existence outfitted with extra cage mounts and bottle bosses, especially bikes intended for touring or bikepacking. Provisions often include a pair (or triplet) on the underside of the downtube, as well every bit a three-pack of bosses on each fork blade (see our Gear Index of Forks with Bottle Cage Mounts). However, some bike companies are nevertheless anti "fork warts." And, many older bikes were relegated to two pairs within the frame triangle. Fortunately, there is an ever-growing list of products made to add together cage mounts to your bike with various connection techniques. Notice that full production list below, and so scroll down to notice several DIY methods for adding bottle cages and mounts.

Boulder Honaker
- Type: Soft Water Bottle Cage
- Made of: X-pac/Rhinotec/Cordura
- Attachment: Velco Straps
- Bottle Size: Nalgene 32oz
We're firm believers that every wheel should feature canteen muzzle mounts on the underside of its down tube, bar a few suspended 26ers, where clearance is tight. Information technology's a no-brainer area for water storage; the centre of gravity is kept depression, and at that place'due south rarely any interference with terrain or obstacles. Unfortunately, all also many bikes skimp on such potential for water hauling. Boulder's Honaker Hydro Pack comes in handy for just such scenarios, designed as it is to concord a 1L Nalgene bottle, via a bag strapped to your bike's downwardly tube.
The Honaker features with a strip of Velcro sewn in vertically, as well as an agglutinative backed strip for the downwards tube of the bike. This doesn't act equally support, only works to keep the bag from rotating or sliding. At that place are two main straps that hold the bag in place; each has a rubberized bankroll cloth where they make contact, providing a secure anchor point. The spindrift collar is designed to keep the bottle clean, a nice feature when riding in cattle land. It was originally designed to fit a standard 700-800ml h2o bottle, merely at present has been updated to fit a larger Nalgene. We tested it using the Zefal 1L Magnum.
We used the Honaker mounted to the Marin Pine Mountain ii on our trip in southern Kingdom of spain. Information technology worked flawlessly, and we rode some crude stuff. The only complaint is that it was a little tough to become the bottle in and out without undoing the straps a footling. Only if you approach it as storage for a backup bottle for campsite utilise, information technology'southward perfect. Overall it's a ruggedly built production that works well for bikes without down tube mounts

DrJ0n Barnacles
- Type: Bottle Cage Mount
- Fabricated of: Plastic, brass, steel
- Attachment: Clamp
The Barnacle by Drj0n Bagworks provides a low-profile mounting option for bottle and cargo cages on the fork, downtube, or other locations on a bike frame. The Barnacle clamp is 3D-printed from durable plastic and comes in 9 diameters ranging from 25.4mm to 47mm, designed to fit normally available downtubes in steel, aluminum, and titanium, and also rigid steel and pause forks. You tin can also utilise rubber strips to help accommodate varied tubes. For case, 45mm with a 1mm condom strip fits a Fox 34 or a Play a joke on 36 without.
Each Barnacle uses an M5 bolt and swivel nut to secure it to the tubing and a brass M5 threaded boss embedded into it. Although they tin can handle more, Jon suggests loading the Barnacles up with no more than ane,000 grams will have negative effects on the bike'south handling (when mounting to the fork), and should be avoided. Find more at our press release hither.
While we haven't tested the Barnacle specifically, nosotros have put some miles on the DeWidget G-Funk Clamps, which are the same pattern and we have no problem vouching for their operation and reliability.

King Muzzle Universal Support Bolt (USB)
- Blazon: Bottle Cage Mountain
- Made of: Stainless Steel
- Attachment: Clench
The stainless steel Rex Cage USB (Universal Support Commodities) is a versatile solution for bikes without bottle cages, or suspension forks. More often than not speaking, we've been impressed by the build quality and idea that King put into these little gadgets. Since our beginning test, which went relatively well, the USBs have been redesigned. This is a welcome alter since we had a couple break when not properly tightened. The updated versions shown here include a beefier post mount area which looks bombproof. We'll update our review with more feedback in one case we put them through the wringer.
Considering that many new bikes are missing a pair of canteen bosses under the downtube, and at that place's no such thing as a suspension fork bottle mountain, the USB is a good selection. Information technology comes in four sizes: 1 ane/viii-inch for handlebars and seat stays, 1 3/8-inch for steel frames and forks, ane 5/eight-inch for 32mm suspension forks, and 2-inch for aluminum tube bikes and 36mm suspension forks. Note that because the muzzle attaches via a postal service mount, the nut goes onto the cage and some bottle cages might not work if they don't have a recessed channel.

Adding Permanent Bottle Muzzle Mounts to Your Frame
If you lot aren't upwards for clamping, strapping, or taping mounts to your frame, there are two means to permanently add bottle bosses to your frame or fork.
Hire a Framebuilder
While it's possible to have a carbon adept drill and gum bottle mounts in a carbon frame, and there's likely a way to weld in bosses on an aluminum frame, both of those scenarios go pretty complicated. We won't even become into it. Notwithstanding, if you lot have a steel frame, it's pretty straightforward. We had bosses added to the underside of two v1 Bearish Trolls' downtubes (before they became a standard feature). Information technology works similar a charm and doesn't cost too much. Yet, framebuilders are a busy lot, then you might have to wait. In addition, when deciding where the bosses are going to become, consider tire clearance when your suspension fork is compressed, if you run i. And, realize that brazing will impairment the terminate on your bike, which might require a repaint, or at least a partial respray.
Rivnut Canteen Bosses
"Rivnuts," also known as rivet nuts or threaded rivet inserts, are one-piece, internally threaded tubular rivets that tin can be anchored from one side. To clarify, a rivnut attaches by way of a threaded tool that compresses it, buckles one side, and clamps information technology onto the panel into which it's beingness riveted. If you don't heed drilling your fork or frame, this is a good solution that tin be implemented for a fairly reasonable toll. We did information technology on a Surly Troll and rode it thousands of miles with no issue. Read virtually the process hither. Note that ane advantage to Rivnuts is that they don't crave a respray, but the disadvantage is they could rattle loose. Besides, this process is best done on burly forks rather than ones that are lightweight and slender.
Attaching Canteen Cages to Your Bike (DIY)
In this Bikepacking Hacks video, Neil discusses the importance of mounts and cages and demonstrates six DIY methods of adding them to your bike. Watch that below and scroll down for a list of DIY methods
Hose Clamp Canteen Cage
Hose clamps (aka pipage clamps) are the most common method used to attach bottle cages onto suspension forks or a boss-less metal wheel frame. We don't recommend this method for a carbon fork, although we've seen it washed with padding and a lite bear upon. Hose clamps are measured in diameter, so y'all'll need to calculate the tubing size plus the cage you lot're clamping; I typically use a three.0″ clamp on a fox 34 or RockShox fork (mutual break forks accept a 1.75″ bore) sandwiching a layer of recycled inner tube or electrical tape to protect the tubing. Tighten information technology enough to concord the cage in identify (but not as well tight on a pause fork). Note that some cages work especially well for this. Widefoot's oversized cage has strap slots and Salsa'south Nickless Cage has slots through which the straps tin be threaded. Others have tabs. With some cages, y'all might need longer piping clamps to strap effectually the tubular rails.
Electrical Tape Bottle Cages
First seen in our listing of Bikepacking Hacks, electric record is probably the safest and most trustworthy method of attaching standard bottle cages to a fork, downtube, interruption fork, or just about anywhere, even on oversized tubes. For a secure mountain, apply about 2/iii of a roll of electric tape. The Lezyne Power Cages work great for this. To protect your frame, kickoff apply a little tape where the cage will make contact. The muzzle shown above lasted close to 1,000 miles while bikepacking and trail riding all over the rugged southwest, and it was removed earlier showing any signs of wearable. The great thing about electrical tape is that is comes off easily without residue.
Aught Ties and Tubes
Although this is our least favorite method for attaching a bottle cage to a fork or downtube, it tin can work with the right aught ties and appropriate load. While nil ties are strong, they're not as potent as metal straps, and they accept a tendency to dry rot and wear down over time. Either manner, this method works. Utilise the beefiest nada ties yous tin can notice, and similar the pipe-clamp method, sandwich cut pieces of recycled inner tube betwixt the cage and tubing to prevent slippage and abrasion.
Voile Straps
Voile straps are highly useful for bolstering big h2o bottles in more flimsy cages, specially on very rough terrain. Yet, strapping a cage onto a frame with Voiles is also doable. You tin can do information technology with some cages that accept slots large enough to fit the straps. Or, on oversized cages, you lot can but strap on the muzzle, then strap the bottle to that. Information technology's a little messy, but doable. Note that information technology's improve for use with carbon or aluminum oversized downtubes.
Equally with our other Gear Indexes, please let us know in the comments if yous are aware of another product or hack to add bottle cage mounts to your bike, or ways to carry an extra water bottle.
